SF settles with owner, landlord of Outer Mission building called “death trap”

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced Thursday that his office has reached a $620,000 settlement with the owner and commercial occupant of a building who housed tenants in a squalid, hazardous basement for at least 11 years. The San Francisco Fire Department found 20 people living in rooms infested with rats and roaches in the basement of a three-story building in the Outer Mission neighborhood in 2016. More budget hearings on deck for Quincy city council

QUINCY — The city council’s finance committee will hold hearings over the next two weeks as it looks to hammer out the city’s budget. The first hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and will be followed by a second at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, that is expected to wrap up discussion of Mayor Thomas Koch’s budget proposal. An Auburn, Wash., plumber who lied about working while he was receiving disability payments has been sentenced to serve 45 days in detention. Bobby Eugene Stepp, 66, claimed he wasn’t working due to an on-the-job injury, while he was actually running his own plumbing business that took in more than $144,000 during that time. King County Superior Court Judge Theresa Doyle ordered the sentence last week for Stepp, and allowed him to serve the time in electronic home monitoring.
